The solicitor general from the Justice Department will file a brief with the administration’s position.
The Supreme Court requested input from President Biden’s administration over an appeal submitted by a group of oil companies. The group seeks the court to overturn a Hawaii ruling that accused the companies of deceiving the public about climate change. After the justices review the brief submitted by the U.S. solicitor general, the Supreme Court will decide whether or not it will take on the case.
The city and county of Honolulu and the Honolulu Board of Water Supply first filed the lawsuit against oil companies in 2020, saying that companies such as Exxon Mobil, BP, and Shell intentionally published misleading statements about the negative impact fossil fuels have on human-induced climate change. Hawaii’s state supreme court allowed the lawsuit to proceed, prompting the oil companies to appeal the ruling to the Supreme Court.
